Wuye Traders Demand Action over Unfair Shop Allocation Fees

Traders at the Wuye market in Abuja have called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, to intervene in the alleged exorbitant fees requested by a property firm before shops could be allocated to them in the market.

The Counsel to the traders, Mr. Sepiribo Peters, accused the FCT administration of attempting to exploit the traders, contrary to promise a made to them earlier.

He explained the Wuye market traders had since 2002 paid a token to government for the shops, after the administration burnt their wares at the old market.

“They were asked to pay various sums for the market,” he said, “in fact, it was a full and final payment, it was not part payment and as we used to say, agreement is agreement. So, since they have finished payment, it was for the government to hand over those shops to them.”
