Nigeria will Cease to Exist if Jonathan is not Re-elected - Ezeife

Anambra State’s former governor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, believes that Nigeria as a country will disintegrate is President Goodluck Jonathan doesn’t contest a second term in the 2015 national elections.

Speaking to Vanguard newspaper in Abuja, he said that Jonathan’s re-election and Nigeria’s future were intertwined, and if he doesn’t run for office again, the Niger Delta militants will cause chaos in the country and seek autonomy from Nigeria.

“The truth of the matter is that opposing President Jonathan's second term is like opposing the continued existence of Nigeria as one united country,” he said. “What do you think would happen if as a result of the handiwork of the opposition, President Jonathan is disallowed from running for a second term in office?

“Whether you are from the North, South or West, you can't stop President Jonathan from going for a second term and winning.”

Ezeife also declared that if the President lost the elections, there will be anarchy in the Niger Delta.

“The Niger Delta boys would blow up all the oil pipelines and then a part of the country could say they are no longer interested in Nigeria; they could say Nigeria legally expired when the nation marked its centenary and that they are now on their own.”

The former governor said he was opposed to such a thing happening, but maintained that the scenario he described is possible if the country only considers its short term interests and not the long term implications.

"If Jonathan contests and loses in a free and fair election where Nigerians truly vote against him, it would be less bloody than if he is not allowed to contest at all."
