The
Minister of Sports Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has promised to pay out
$100,000 (N16m) to the home-based Super Eagles if they progress to the
finals of the African Nations Championship.
The
national team’s stunning comeback in last Saturday’s match against
Morocco – where they valiantly fought back from being 3-0 down to win
4-3 in extra time – was partly attributed to Abdullahi’s earlier offer
of $100,000 if they win.
The
minister said the team would get the money for that win before they
play Ghana , who yesterday defeated DR Congo 1-0 to book their place at
Wednesday’s semi final clash against Nigeria.
Abdullahi
said that the incentives are the Nigerian government’s way of
motivating the players to give their best. He praised the Eagles
performance in the competition so far, which is being held in South
Africa, especially in their match against Morocco.
“With
the kind of overwhelming joy that followed the victory across our
country, one cannot but feel that perhaps, these players are destined to
win the trophy,” he noted.
“If
the boys qualify for the final and go ahead to win the trophy, they can
be confident that a grateful nation will remember for a long time to
come that they, with typical Nigerian grits and determination, have
extended our dominance of African football.”
