FCT Indigenes Demand Development Commission

The indigenous people of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under the auspices of the Original Inhabitants Development Association of Abuja, (OIDA) has called on the Federal Government to create a development commission that would cater to their needs.

The President of the association, Pastor Danladi Jeji, made the call in Abuja at the weekend during the FCT Heritage Day celebration.

Pastor Jeji recommended that the commission should be modelled on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC).

“The proposed Abuja Original Inhabitants Development Commission (AOIDC) should be statutory and derive its funding from 30% of all sales accruing from allocable lands within the FCT,” he said. “When established, AOIDC should deal with the lingering issues of relocation, resettlement and compensation for all project-affected communities and persons.”

He further called on the FCT minister, Senator Bala Mohammed to, as a matter of policy, upgrade traditional rulers in the territory and name major streets in Abuja city centre after FCT indigenous heroes.
