The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor James Sunday
Adelabu, announced at the 22nd Matriculation of the university, that
all its programmes, including the Engineering courses, have now been
fully approved accredited.
“I
find it necessary to explain to the fresh students some of the issues
they may have heard surrounding the new programmes and to assure them
that there is no cause for alarm. Agreed that there were problems with
the programmes but the circumstances of their coming into existence were
beyond the control of the present administration," he told the 2,500
matriculating students of the university.
The
National Universities Commission (NUC) had last week announced the
accreditation of the Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture
courses as well as the approval for Engineering courses for the
University.
He
stated that the university will also be building more classrooms and
hostels and will also aim to reduce campus transportation fares.
The Chairman of the Task Team for the NUC, Eugene Okpere, said confirmed that everything was ready for the new programmes.
“We
are happy to say that University of Abuja is more than ready to run
these courses and the facilities we see here are even superior to those
in other teaching hospitals,” he said.
The
former Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, had suspended
the four courses in 2012 after a visit by a panel set up to assess the
needs of universities.
Students
of the university, led by the Engineering students, had protested the
non-accreditation of courses leading to the closure of the institution
for several months. When the school was re-opened, the Engineering
students were transferred to nearby public universities to complete
their courses.
