Boko Haram: Court Fixes Date for Ruling on Lecturer’s Bail Application

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed February 28 for ruling on the bail application brought by Dr Nazeef Yunus, a lecturer in the department of Islamic Studies at the Kogi State University, Ayingba, accused of being a member of a Boko Haram terrorist group.

 

Counsel to the accused, Barr. Hassan Liman, said Dr Yunus has been able to present to the court cogent and convincing facts which will persuade the court to exercise its discretion in granting bail in favour of the first accused person.

 

Meanwhile, the prosecution counsel Barr. M.B Jones-Nebo said that the accused person is charged under the Terrorism Prevention Act 2013 and is likely to jump bail because it carries death penalty.

 

“We are asserting here that the offence borders on national security and Kogi state in particular,” she said. “Granting them bail will lead to security risks and threats to unsuspecting public.”

 

Presiding judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, therefore fixed February 28 for ruling on the matter and ordered that the accused be remanded in Kuje prison.
